The Komatsu HB205-1 Hybrid Excavator is part of the “green technology”, while being an equipment that delivers both strength and efficiency, decreasing the environmental impact compared to conventional models.

The HB205-1 is equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine added to an innovative and ultra-technological generator motor that assists the engine in different load conditions and makes it work with maximum efficiency.

The capacitor’s characteristics enable instantaneous power delivery and frequent charge-discharge cycles. The hybrid excavator achieves the same level of productivity as conventional PC200-8 models, along with lower pollutant emissions.

Technological innovation does not stop at the Hybrid System. The HB205-1 also comes equipped with the Komtrax fleet monitoring and management system.

How does it work?

The Komatsu Hybrid System operates using a process we call regeneration. The key component of this system is the unique and innovative Komatsu ultra-capacitor. The kinetic energy generated during the deceleration phase of the swing motion is converted into electricity, sent to the inverter, and then instantly captured by the ultra-capacitor.

This energy is quickly converted into high voltage, powering the swing motor and providing acceleration to the machine under various load conditions. 

Conventional excavators use a hydraulic motor to rotate the upper structure of the machine; for this movement, Komatsu has developed its own system consisting of an electric motor exclusively for the Hybrid System, which regenerates the energy generated during the deceleration phase of the swing movement.

Conventional excavators also use the diesel engine as the power source for all components. In contrast, the Komatsu Hybrid System harnesses the energy generated during the aforementioned deceleration phase to assist the diesel engine under various load conditions via a generator motor coupled to the diesel engine, ensuring the engine always maintains low RPMs and creating situations where fuel consumption is significantly reduced.

As a result, fuel consumption is improved through the use of regenerated energy in situations of higher demand placed on the diesel engine. This allows the engine to operate at maximum efficiency and within an optimized range.
