The Henry G. “Hank” Grundstedt San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory is located 23 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The laboratory was once an operating mine where silver, lead, zinc and copper were extracted. Now it is maintained by the University of Arizona as a student-run, multilevel, underground mining laboratory with a working vertical shaft that also serves as a training and research resource for federal and state agencies. Considered a center of excellence in mine health and safety, the laboratory, through its operator, the University of Arizona, has decades of mining industry partnerships that illustrate the industry’s commitment to creating a culture of mine health and safety.
