Project challenge
The Globe-Miami Mining district in the Cobre Valley of Arizona is one of the oldest and largest copper districts in the Americas.
Capstone Mining, working in the Pinto Valley open pit copper mine in the district, was facing drilling production challenges regarding availability of their drills, as well as having the trained resources available to effectively address issues.
Solution design
To help Capstone meet its goals, Komatsu offered a trial of a ZT44 track drill, including operator training, service training and coverage by the Milwaukee engineering team. An applications study was initiated to document the drill’s performance and observe operator behavior.
The Results
Over the course of 60 days, the site solely relied on the ZT44 to do all its presplit drilling and became the operators’ drill of choice. The ZT44 was drilling holes in half the time it took for the site’s other production drills to finish similar holes.
Overall feedback from operators was extremely positive and management tasked their team to transition the machine to around-the-clock operation.
In our initial application study and site follow-up, Capstone continued to see reductions in cycle time and increases in penetration rates.
