For contractors working across civil construction, quarrying and mining, payload, fuel consumption and operating costs can directly influence haul-cycle productivity. The Komatsu HM460-6 addresses these priorities with a 42-tonne maximum payload, increased engine output and lower fuel consumption compared with the HM400-5, alongside operator-assist features and longer service intervals.
The next-generation articulated dump truck builds on the longstanding success of the HM400 series and was developed in response to customer demand for greater productivity in the popular 40-tonne class.
Nick Vrontas, National Business Manager for Komatsu Australia, says increased payload was a key customer requirement.
“The previous model, the HM400-5, has been the most popular truck in its class for a long time, but customers have been asking for more payload. The HM460-6 delivers that, with a 42-tonne capacity that still meets the needs of those same applications,” Nick says.
The HM460-6 is built for quarry, construction, large-scale site development, mining and infrastructure projects where variable terrain, soft ground and haul road conditions can limit productivity.
With a higher-rated payload and improved fuel efficiency compared with the Komatsu HM400-5, the truck is designed to deliver a lower cost per tonne while maintaining stable, predictable operation throughout the haul cycle.
“Across Australia and New Zealand, you’ll see it used in civil applications like pipelaying, moving material around on construction sites, and even wind farms, as well as in quarries as a haul truck or bin truck and also in mining on subcontractor fleets moving material around. It’s a great, versatile piece of machinery that we know will be popular with our customer base,” Nick says.
The HM460-6 has a maximum payload of 42 tonnes, a 5% increase compared with the HM400-5. Powered by the new Komatsu DBA127 engine, gross engine output is 386 kW, representing a 9% increase compared with the previous model.
Fuel consumption is reduced by around 12%, while fuel efficiency measured in tonnes per litre is estimated to improve by 22% compared with the HM400-5. Komatsu notes that the actual effect may vary depending on the work being performed.
These figures are documented in the Komatsu HM460-6 product brochure, which compares the new machine with the HM400-5.
“When you combine the increased payload and reduced fuel use, you see about a 22% improvement in efficiency, which is a big plus for contractors looking to improve productivity and save costs wherever they can,” Nick says.
The HM460-6 features a redesigned operator environment, with a new cab layout focused on visibility, ergonomics and ease of use.
Updated displays, improved sightlines and a range of operator-assist technologies are designed to reduce fatigue and improve overall productivity throughout the shift. The HM460-6 product brochure details cruise control, Automatic Retard Speed Control, machine inclination monitoring, a rollover prevention system and hill start assist among its driving and operator-support systems.
“There are a lot of operator-assist features now, including cruise control for uphill and downhill, automatic retarder braking, rollover prevention system with an inclinometer, KomVision cameras and hill start assist, all designed to make the operator’s day easier so they’re not getting out of the cab fatigued at the end of their shift,” Nick says.
Maintenance and serviceability have also been enhanced, with extended service intervals helping to reduce downtime and lower operating costs.
The HM460-6 product brochure specifies that the engine oil and filter replacement interval has increased from 500 hours on the HM400-5 to 1,000 hours on the HM460-6. Fuel pre-filter replacement has also increased to 1,000 hours, while transmission and hydraulic oil filter intervals have been extended further.
“We’ve extended service intervals with engine oil and filter changes out to 1,000 hours, another thing to help reduce running costs for customers.”
Komatsu has ensured the HM460-6 meets local requirements, with Australian and New Zealand specifications supported through both factory and locally installed features.
“The factory supports Komatsu Australia and New Zealand quite significantly with the amount of extra specification they provide. We get emergency stops, auto-grease, battery and starter isolators as standard, and then locally we fit options to suit customer requirements.”
The HM460-6 has already been introduced in global markets, with units deployed in North America and Europe following its debut at CONEXPO earlier this year. In Australia and New Zealand, the truck was expected to be available from June, with Komatsu planning a series of local demonstrations and customer events to support the rollout.
For civil construction, quarry and mining applications, the HM460-6 combines a 42-tonne maximum payload with approximately 9% more gross engine output and around 12% lower fuel consumption compared with the HM400-5. Fuel efficiency measured in tonnes per litre is estimated to improve by 22%, although actual results may vary depending on the work being performed.
The machine also brings together operator-assist technologies, a redesigned cab and longer maintenance intervals, including 1,000-hour engine oil and filter replacement intervals.
For contractors assessing an articulated dump truck for demanding haul applications, the HM460-6 therefore brings its principal changes together around three operational areas: increased payload, fuel efficiency and operator support.
“It’s a completely new machine, but it’s built on what we know works - reliability, performance and operator comfort – backed with more payload and better efficiency. We’re confident it’s going to be a strong addition to fleets across Australia and New Zealand,” Nick says.
