Productivity is one of the most pressing concerns of mining companies. In this respect, contractors need to avoid unexpected downtime of their machines and corresponding expenditures outside of budgets. To meet such needs, we provide the Repair & Maintenance (R&M) Contract to distributors and contractors. To improve their management of the R&M Contract, we have recently introduced the R+MCare system to help our distributors plan and implement optimal repair and maintenance services in conjunction with VHMS*1 information from the machines. In this way, contractors will be able to not only maintain a top level of operating efficiency but also standardize repair costs.

In June 2004, we started introducing the R+MCare system to Komatsu Australia Pty. Ltd., our wholly owned distributor, which covers the Oceania region. By linking customers' job sites with the Komatsu Group's plants and Reman*2 centers via the Internet, the R+MCare system has enabled a number of encouraging results, including improved risk management of income and expenditures, accelerated speed of problem analysis and enhanced quality of machines and repair work by teaming up with our Production and Development divisions. At the same time, the Production Division has been able to advance its efforts to optimize parts inventory.

In April 2005, we started introducing the R+MCare system to our distributors in other regions as well, including at Komatsu Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd., Komatsu Cummins Chile Ltda., Komatsu Equipment Company and Transwest Mining Systems. In 2007, the system will be launched in countries such as Mexico, Papua New Guinea and India, where our distributors manage large fleets of mining equipment.

*1 VHMS
Vehicle Health Monitoring System is a health monitoring and operation management system for large-sized construction equipment and mining equipment.

*2 Reman
Reman, short for "remanufacturing," entails the following process: disassembly of used components, inspection of each and every part against rigorous usage standards, repair and reuse of only those parts that pass inspection and reassembly into components with the specifications and durability equivalent to new ones.
