Much like automobile tires, undercarriages on such machines as bulldozers and hydraulic excavators degrade with use, and demand for replacement arises as long as the machines are in operation.
With large bulldozers, there are many customers who frequently replace assemblies as often as three or four times during the machine’s life. Since undercarriages are the largest element of operating expenses among the many components, per-hour costs for this product are scrutinized by customers.
In 2000, Komatsu Ltd. established the Undercarriage (UC) Division to provide undercarriage products unmatched in quality, cost and delivery, thereby minimizing per-hour costs and maximizing profits among customers.
Gaining Insight into Specialized Needs
One of the results of founding this new division was the establishment of PT Komatsu Undercarriage Indonesia (KUI) in 2001. KUI is the first Komatsu plant outside Japan specializing in undercarriages. Komatsu’s technologies, know-how, designs and assurance system were transferred from Japan, whereby KUI produces genuine Komatsu undercarriages employing the latest production facilities and Japanese-style manufacturing processes that adhere to stringent and comprehensive quality control.
KUI studied the aftermarket of Southeast Asia and found a need for PC200 hydraulic excavators with logging specifications. The running ratio during working hours for such machines is close to 70%, and given the harsh working conditions, crawler tracks do not last an entire year. To address this problem, Komatsu developed a crawler link specifically for use in logging. Its specialized design has resulted in far greater durability that can assure customers of dependable use in even the most rugged logging environments. KUI has been growing on account of its ability to deliver only the finest products at minimum cost to customers by developing a marketing operation that can accurately examine customers’ needs using local engineer surveys and reflect the results in product development.
Forging Cooperation for Future Success
The success of KUI lies in the joint efforts of local Komatsu group companies and distributors, and even more in the understanding and mutual cooperation of customers loyal to Komatsu brand products and parts. We, at Komatsu, would like to take this opportunity to thank these customers for their unwavering patronage and support.
Komatsu is determined to work toward greater expansion of the UC business to improve its brand image by responding to customers’ needs. In quickly developing optimal products and delivering premium products, Komatsu seeks to maximize customer benefits and satisfaction across the globe.
