On July 21, 2008, Komatsu held a ground-breaking ceremony for Komatsu Manufacturing Rus, LLC (KMR), a new plant in Yaroslavl, Russia, located 280 km (174 mi) northeast of Moscow scheduled to commence operations in June 2010. Members attending the ceremony included Mr. Sergey Vakhrukov, governor of Yaroslavl Region; Mr. Viktor Volonchunas, mayor of Yaroslavl City; and Mr. Aleksey Reshatov, head of administration of the Yaroslavl municipal district. KMR is Komatsu’s first full-scale assembly plant in Russia and is equipped with integrated production lines from welding to assembly for both construction equipment and utility equipment. Situated on premises encompassing an expansive 500,000 m2 (5,382,000 ft2), the factory wing is 72 m (236 ft) in width and 563 m (1,847 ft) in length, with a floor space of 44,000 m2 (473,616 ft2). The structure includes a warehouse in the center, flanked by a production line for hydraulic excavators on the right and a production line for forklift trucks on the left.
The latest robot welding system will be introduced for the welding sections of vehicle frames. These robots operate under optimum welding parameters, as the most appropriate welding program is identified through computer simulation. Moreover, sensors constantly monitor the welding condition, enabling unmanned operations.
KMR is also fitted with a demonstration area where users will be invited to try out the products.
Demand for construction and mining equipment is growing in Russia on the back of strong exports of abundant natural resources. By establishing a production base there, Komatsu is confident it can enhance its support structure for customers in that country.
