Komatsu Shantui Achieved Production and Sales of 10,000 Hydraulic Excavators

On June 12, 2003, Komatsu Shantui Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, Komatsu Shantui, President : Toshihiko Katayama) had a ceremony to celebrate its cumulative production and sales of 10,000 hydraulic excavators. Komatsu Shantui, a subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd. (hereinafter, Komatsu, President : Masahiro Sakane), manufactures and sells 20-tonne (medium-sized) hydraulic excavators (PC 200/220) in Shandong Province, P.R. China.
Established as a Japan-China joint venture company in July 1995, Komatsu Shantui began its production in November 1995 and has grown together with the burgeoning construction machinery market in China. Its high-quality products and reliability in particular have been acknowledged by customers, increasing the production from 110 units in 1996 to over 3,000 units in 2002 and continuing to increase it further this year. Komatsu manufactures PC 200, a core model of hydraulic excavators, in eight countries around the world, with Komatsu Shantui as the largest supply base in the group.
Komatsu increased its controlling share of Komatsu Shantui to 60% in August 2002, making it a consolidated subsidiary to expand its business. Komatsu began the production and sales of "GALEO" series, a new PC 200 model and also started to expand the line to a small class.
Working with joint venture partners, plants and cooperating companies in Japan and improving the productivity and cost-effectiveness, Komatsu Shantui will establish itself as the market leader in the hydraulic excavator market in China, which is expected to continue to grow.
Toshihiko Katayama, President of Komatsu Shantui, said, "As the plant has been completed only recently, as well as the average age of employees is 29, Komatsu Shantui is still young and has a lot of growth potential, compared with plants in Japan, US, and Europe, which have longer histories.
